Cheltenham Festival memories - Brave Inca's Champion Hurdle

Grade One winning Irish trainer Colm Murphy has admitted that Brave Inca’s success in the 2006 Champion Hurdle was one of the greatest moments of his career as the handler prepares Champion Chaser Big Zeb for next month’s meeting.

Murphy is confident that Big Zeb is ready to do himself justice at the Festival and while he was thrilled to see his stable star win the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2010, Brave Inca’s awesome display at Prestbury Park will always be his greatest memory of the world famous meeting.

Speaking exclusively to Cheltenham-Live about the Festival and Brave Inca’s victory, Murphy explained: “Definitely, that was something really special and it’s made even better because it’s at a festival like that.  Everything is geared towards that one day and when you get there and everything goes according to plan and everything does go right it is a pretty special feeling.

“After the race it’s more relief than anything and I don’t think you get to really enjoy it until a while after it has happened.  When he won up there it took a while to realise what he’d actually achieved. “

Murphy speaks fondly about the Festival and with Big Zeb and possibly Quito De La Roque heading to next month’s showpiece, the trainer continued to explain why you though the Cheltenham Festival was so special.

“I suppose from the punter to the breeder everything is geared towards Cheltenham.  To breed a horse that wins at Cheltenham is special and it is a jockey’s dream to ride a winner at the Festival,” he continued.

“It’s a trainers dream to train one for the meeting and it’s an owner’s dream to have a runner there.  It’s the biggest thing in jump racing and it’s an honour to be there.”
